Updating apps

We recommend keeping your apps up to date.  Marketplace vendors can release updates to their apps, independent of application updates.

If the application can connect to the Marketplace, it will notify you when a new version of an installed app is available. Only versions that are compatible with your current application version will be displayed.

You can update apps individually, or all at once.

On this page:

This page describes updating user-installed apps, not the process for updating your Atlassian host application. When planning to upgrade your host application itself, you can check the compatibility of your installed apps against the target version. See Checking Add-on Compatibility for Application Upgrades for more information.

Updating an app

To update an app:

  1. Log into your Atlassian application as a user with administrative privileges.
  2. From the top navigation bar in your application, choose Apps > Manage apps.
  3. From the dropdown that is defaulted to User-installed, choose Action required.
  4. Locate the app you want to update.
  5. Click the Update button next to the app you want to update.
This will download and apply the latest version of the app. When finished, a success message appears.

Updating all apps

To apply updates to all apps at once:

  1. Log into your Atlassian application as a user with administrative privileges.
  2. From the top navigation bar in your application, choose Apps > Manage apps
  3. From the dropdown that is defaulted to User-installed, choose Action required.
  4. Click the Update All button to update every app to the latest version.
  5. This will update all eligible apps.
Only apps that are eligible will be updated. Apps may not be eligible because:
  • the app was free, but has changed to paid
  • your current app license doesn't allow upgrades to that particular version.

Updating apps by file upload

Instead of updating an app automatically (that is, by using the Update button), you can update it by manually loading the updated JAR file to the application. The update procedure is identical to the one for installing by file upload. When you perform this procedure for an existing app, the old app version is removed from the file system, and the new one is added.

You don't normally need to remove the out-of-date app JAR from the system, as long as the app developer has incremented the version identifier within the app descriptor. If you have problems with the update that you think are related to version issue conflicts, contact the app developer.

To update an app by file upload:

  1. Log into your Atlassian application as a user with administrative privileges.
  2. From the top navigation bar in your application, choose Apps > Manage apps.
  3. Choose Upload app.
  4. Locate the file then click Upload
The app uploads and installs, and the latest version replaces the outdated version.

You can also specify a URL to your JAR or OBR file, instead of downloading the file, and re-uploading it.

For more information see Installing Marketplace apps.

Enabling automatic updates

Administrators can choose to enable automatic updates.  Automatic updates are disabled by default, and not all apps are able to be updated automatically.

To enable automatic updates:

  1. Log into your Atlassian application as a user with administrative privileges.
  2. From the top navigation bar in your application, choose Apps > Manage apps.
  3. Enable the Automatically Update Atlassian-Selected Apps option.
  4. Click Apply

This will apply updates automatically, logs the event in the audit log, and generates a notification.
