Summary

When we try to add customised notifications for a project, the following error is thrown:

Something went wrong.

There was an issue updating your notifications preference, we're working on fixing it, please try again later.

Environment

Jira Cloud

Diagnosis

Upon checking the project permissions, it was found that the user didn't have the Browse Projects permission.

Cause

In Jira, issue notifications are not triggered if the user doesn't have permission to view the issue. For company-managed projects, this is governed by the Browse Project permission and Security levels (if configured).

For team-managed projects, it is governed by the project's Access Level, and the Project Role assigned to the user.

Solution

Since these options are available under the user's personal settings, the user customising the notification for a project must have permission to view issues in that project. The above error indicates that the user doesn't have the required permissions in the project. The user should contact the Jira administrator or the project administrator to grant them the required permissions, which will fix this error.
