Cannot link Jira issues in one or more projects

Summary

Users are unable to link issues to each other in one or more Jira projects. Also, the "Linked issue" field isn't visible on some projects.

Common causes and solutions

There are multiple causes for this behavior. Depending on the way the problem appears, the solution may also differ. 

ProblemSolution
No users are able to link issues across any projects.Enable the global setting to allow issue linking across Jira:
  1. Select gear Settings > Issues

  2. Navigate to Issue Linking

  3. A status message indicates whether issue linking is OFF or ON

  4. If OFF, select Activate to enable
No users are able to link issues across certain projects.
  1. Add the Linked issue field to the View and Edit screens for the affected project(s)
    1. Please refer to our documentation: Add a field to a screen
  2. Ensure the Linked issue field is not hidden in the field configuration for your project
    1. Please refer to our documentation: Specify field behavior (hide or show a field)
Some users are unable to link issues across certain projects.

Grant Link issues permission in the project permission scheme:

  1. Navigate to your project
  2. Select Project settings > Permissions
  3. Select gear Actions > Edit permissions
  4. Grant Link issues to the appropriate groups, project roles, or individuals
