Summary

When trying to "Reorder Pages" in Space Tools, no pages are listed under the Page Tree. Instead, only the following message appears:

You can move any page by dragging it to a new position in the tree.

When accessing a page in that Space, using the Side Bar, the Page Tree macro is unable to render. The following error message appears:

Error rendering macro 'pagetree'

Cyclic loop is detected in page tree structure. Please report to admin.

Environment

Confluence 6.15.6

Diagnosis

Look for nested entries in the Page Tree that contains the same name as a parent page.

Cause

Duplicate page structure will cause Confluence Page Tree macro to reach a cyclic loop:

  • Page A is parent of Page B;
  • Page B is parent of Page C;
  • Page C is parent of Page A;

When Confluence reaches this state, features that rely on the tree structure will not work as expected.

Confluence UI prevents users from creating or moving pages with the same name within a space, but they are able to do it by directly editing database tables or a Space XML export.

Solution

  1. To prevent losing data, copy one of the pages that hold the cyclic reference within the original space to a second space. Do not include child pages when copying it, otherwise the cyclic references will be copied to that space.
  2. Delete the page that was previously copied from the original space.
  3. Adjust the new page hierarchy using the "Reorder Pages" in Space Tools.
