Symptoms

Confluence does not start when connecting to MySQL. The following appears in the atlassian-confluence.log:

com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.MySQLNonTransientConnectionException: Server connection failure during transaction. Due to underlying exception: 'java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused'.

Cause

MySQL is running with the --skip-networking option.

Resolution

On OS X 10.4 Server, the MySQL Manager program turns off networking by default. This needs to be turned on in /etc/mysqlManager.plist or in the MySQL Manager (if that option is available).
